Strip-till

Legumes need ‘breathing’ soil. The most important aspect of soil cultivation for legumes is the rule of cultivation preserving the soil structure – do not crush to dust and do not clog it.

Compared to the traditional ploughing cultivation, the past field experiments led to a conclusion that field beans and narrowleaf lupin reacted with the highest increase of seed yields among the legumes in all the used strip-till variants.

Peas, white lupins and soya beans yielded at levels similar to the conventional cultivation.

Simplified tillage and strip sowing may be successfully used in the cultivation of field beans, white and narrowleaf lupin and soya without a deterioration of their yield. Strip sowing, as an environmentally friendly, sustainable agriculture and integrated pest management approach, can be considered an agrotechnical factor mitigating the effects of drought occurring during the vegetation season of legumes.
