As a plant with a taproot system, winter rape particularly well reacts to the strip-till technology. This technology allows the optimal agro-technical sowing dates for rape to be maintained. The uniform emergence and growth during the vegetation period are also a very important advantage.
The cultivation of winter rape starts with the correct harvesting of the forecrop. Evenly distributed along the entire operating width of a combine harvester and well cut harvest residue are the first step towards success. It is also important to have the forecrop cut as low as possible. If required, the field may be prepared with a single pass of a disc harrow – running as shallow as possible – or a mulching harrow.

The best choice will include hybrid varieties of winter rape, which perform very well when sown when spread wide apart thanks to their very extensive lateral branching, which accounts for nearly 70% of the yield.
The reduced density is provided to decrease the pressure on plants in a strip. It is also important to reduce the starting fertilisation, as we sow the fertiliser only there, where the plants are sown and the intention is not to damage the seedling due to excessive salinisation of the cultivated strip.
In addition to economic benefits such as reduced planting density (20-30%), reduced starter fertilisation (20-30%), reduced fuel consumption and shorter work time required for winter rape cultivation, a very important aspect is the mulch left on the surface, which limits the growth of weeds, and vertical loosening which does not mix the soil, offering savings of water required for plant growth.
It is also worth mentioning that during winters with little rainfall, the rape sown using mulch is less likely to freeze and cold wind burn.
